How Big Do Bernedoodles Get?

How big will my Bernedoodle get? It is one of the first questions people ask, and a fair one. A small apartment dog and a big, sprawling family dog are very different roommates. Here is how size works with this breed and how to plan for it.

What decides a Bernedoodle's size

A Bernedoodle's size comes mostly from its parents. The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large breed. Poodles come in several sizes, from toy and miniature up to standard. The size of the Poodle parent has the biggest influence on the puppies, with the Bernese parent's size also playing a part.

That means two Bernedoodle litters can end up very different adult sizes, even though both are called Bernedoodles. Always ask about the parents of the litter you are looking at, not just the breed in general.

Size ranges

Bernedoodles are often described in rough size groups, from smaller dogs through mid-sized to large. Exact weights depend on the individual and on the parents, so treat any chart you see online as a general guide rather than a promise. Ask your breeder for the expected adult size range for your puppy's parents, and if possible meet the parents.

Why puppies from one litter can differ

Because Bernedoodles are a crossbreed, siblings inherit different mixes of their parents' traits. One puppy may lean toward the Poodle side and one toward the Bernese. You may see differences in size, coat and even energy within the same litter.

This is another reason we get to know each puppy's personality while they grow in our home. It helps us match each family with the puppy that suits their space and lifestyle.

When do Bernedoodles stop growing?

Most reach their full height at around a year old and then keep filling out for another year or so. Larger dogs can take a little longer to mature. During this stage, feed a growth-appropriate food and keep your dog lean. Extra weight is hard on growing joints, especially in larger dogs. We cover feeding in what to feed a Bernedoodle puppy.

Can I guess adult size from a puppy?

You can make an educated guess, but not a certain one. Looking at the size of both parents is the most useful tool. Paw size and growth rate offer clues, and your veterinarian can help you track growth over time. Be wary of anyone who promises an exact adult weight for a young puppy.

Choosing the right size for your home

Think about the practical side:

  • Space: smaller Bernedoodles often suit apartments best, though exercise matters more than square footage
  • Strength: a large dog needs training in leash manners early
  • Travel: think about your car, and whether you will travel with your dog
  • Cost: bigger dogs usually eat more and cost more for medication and boarding
  • Lifestyle: hikers may love a larger dog, while city walkers may prefer a smaller one

Be honest about what your home and routines can handle.

Size and health

Larger dogs can be more prone to joint problems and tend to have shorter lives than smaller ones, which is true across many breeds. Health-tested parents, a lean body weight, sensible exercise and regular veterinary care all help. Our guide to Bernedoodle health testing explains what to ask a breeder.

Exercise needs by size

Size does not change the basic need for daily activity, but it changes how you provide it. A smaller Bernedoodle may be satisfied with a couple of walks and playtime. A larger one may want more room to run. Whatever the size, mental exercise matters too. See our guide to Bernedoodle exercise and temperament.

Quick answers

Is a bigger Bernedoodle a calmer dog? Not necessarily. Energy and temperament vary by individual, so size alone does not predict calmness.

Will my puppy's paws tell me the adult size? Large paws can hint at a bigger dog, but it is only a hint. The parents' sizes tell you far more than any single feature.

Do males get bigger than females? Often males run a little larger, but there is plenty of overlap, and the parents matter most. Ask us about the litter you are interested in, and we will share what we see as the puppies grow. We would rather give you an honest range than an exact number we cannot promise.

How we help families choose

When families join our waitlist we ask about their home, their space, their activity level and what they want in a companion. Then we talk about the size of the litters we expect and what that could mean for them. We would rather you find out now than be surprised a year from now.

If you are wondering what size might fit your home, contact us or look at our available puppies. You can also read more answers in our FAQ.
