Are Bernedoodles Good Family Dogs? What Parents Should Know
By Zach, Z and Z Doodles · · 5 min read

We raise Bernedoodles alongside our own children, so this question is close to home for me. Are Bernedoodles good family dogs? Often, yes. But "family dog" means different things in different homes, and being honest about both sides helps you make the right choice.
Why many families love them
Most Bernedoodles are affectionate, patient and eager to be part of daily life. The Bernese Mountain Dog side is known for gentleness and loyalty, and the Poodle side adds intelligence and playfulness. Many are happy to snuggle on the couch and equally happy to play in the yard. They tend to want to be wherever their people are.
Bernedoodles and children
Bernedoodles are typically gentle and tolerant with children, and many become best friends with the kids in the house. But no breed is safe on its own. Supervision, training and teaching children matter more than the breed.
- Always supervise young children with any dog
- Teach kids to pet gently and never pull ears, tails or fur
- Do not let children bother a dog that is eating or sleeping
- Teach your dog polite behavior, such as not jumping
- Remember that large puppies can knock over small children by accident
Puppies are mouthy and will test their teeth on small hands. Give them chew toys and redirect them, as we describe in our socialization timeline.
Other pets
Many Bernedoodles get along with other dogs and with cats, particularly when introduced carefully. Early socialization helps a lot. Start slowly, use neutral ground and give each animal safe spaces. Tell us about your pets when you talk to us so we can match a puppy with the right personality.
Energy and exercise
Bernedoodles are active but rarely frantic. Most need a decent walk or play session once or twice a day, plus mental activity. If your family is active, they will keep up. If your family is not, they can become bored and mischievous. Our guide to exercise and temperament covers this.
Time and grooming
A family dog is a family project. Brushing several times a week, grooming every six to eight weeks, training, walks and vet care all need time and a plan. Decide who does what. Read our grooming guide to see what the commitment looks like.
Being left alone
Bernedoodles love people, and some struggle with long hours alone. If everyone is away at school and work all day, plan for a dog walker, daycare or a family member to break up the day. Build up alone time gradually from the start.
Size and space
Size varies, and larger Bernedoodles take more room. A big dog in a small house with active toddlers can be a challenge, while a smaller dog may suit that home better. Read how big Bernedoodles get to plan.
Allergies in the family
Many allergy-sensitive families do well with their low-shedding coats, but no dog is hypoallergenic. If anyone in your home has allergies, spend time with the breed first. See are Bernedoodles hypoallergenic.
When a Bernedoodle might not fit
A Bernedoodle may not be right if no one will have time to groom, train and exercise, if you want a dog that needs little attention, or if the household is chaotic and unable to follow routines. There is no shame in deciding another dog suits you better.
How we match families
This is the part we care about most. We ask about your home, children, other pets, activity level and experience. Then we match you with the puppy whose personality fits. A calm family may be paired with a laid-back pup and an active family with an energetic one. We never match by line order.
Quick answers
Do Bernedoodles do well with teenagers? Often yes. Teens can take on real responsibility for walks, training and play, which many dogs love.
Are they good for seniors? Many are affectionate companions, though a large, strong puppy can be a lot for someone with limited mobility.
What is the one thing that matters most? A match between the dog and the household. A family that exercises, trains and grooms regularly will usually be rewarded with a loyal, loving companion. If you are not sure, start a conversation with us, and we will give you an honest opinion.
